This sosaku kokeshi is a very rare piece by Shozan Shido. She is for sure different from his other designs as it is mainly a representation of a face instead of a 'whole' kokeshi. She is made from beautiful wood. Features that resemble his other work are the hairstyle and the mouth (a small hole). This kokeshi is a once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire her because they are really rare.

Short Bio of Shido Shozan (1932 - 1995)

Shido Shozan was born in Oita prefecture in 1932. Originally, he was a traditional Yamagata artisan and attended the Chuo University in Tokyo. He later moved to Yonezawa which greatly influenced some of his designs to depict Yonezawa motifs. His later work also often uses the natural wood grain to bring out delicate and beautiful designs. Shido won numerous awards including the prestigious Prime Minister Award. His kokeshi are arguably amongst the most popular, and sought by collectors all over the world making them highly expensive. Shido-San passed away in 1995.
