This is a spectacular kokeshi by one of the most famous kokeshi makers of all times. She is titled 'Hanakazari' meaning blossoming. She has a lovely big hairstyle and kimono decorated with cherry blossoms falling down. The cherry blossom or 'Sakura' is the national flower of Japan. She signifies the ending of the winter and the beginning of spring. She has such an elegance!
Sansaku Sekiguchi was born in 1925 an he is the only certified Master of Creative Kokeshi by the Japanese Government. He even has his own museum in Gunma. He won numerous awards including three times the prestigious Prime Minister Award!!! His kokeshi are arguably among the most popular, and sought by collectors all over the world making them highly expensive. Sekiguchi-San passed away in 2018. His sons, Toa, Toshio and his daughter Izumi now also make kokeshi quite successfully winning many prices at contests.
