This is a Museum Quality kokeshi by Shido Shozan. She is beautifully chuncky and the wood is just spectacular. She has those lovely decorative colorful patterns that some of the Shozan kokeshi have. The hair of the doll is beautifuly shaped. This is an extremely rare find and a centerpiece for every serious kokeshi collector. This can also feature nicely in your home interior as a real eyecatcher.

Short Bio of Shido Shozan (1932 - 1995)
Shido Shozan was born in Oita prefecture in 1932. Originally, he was a traditional Yamagata artisan and attended the Chuo University in Tokyo. He later moved to Yonezawa which greatly influenced some of his designs to depict Yonezawa motifs. His later work also often uses the natural wood grain to bring out delicate and beautiful designs. Shido won numerous awards including the prestigious Prime Minister Award. His kokeshi are arguably amongst the most popular, and sought by collectors all over the world making them highly expensive. Shido-San passed away in 1995.
