This is a spectacular kokeshi by Kato Tatsuo. This kokeshi is dated 1977 and is his earlier work. You can clearly see from the face of the doll that it is distinct from his later work in the 80s. The eyes are different and the nose is not yet in relief. This kokeshi feels monumental. She is large and her kimono is decorated with mysterious flames called 'Kitsunebi' which are atmospheric ghost lights told about in legends in Japan.
Tatsuo's work is always outstanding. This kokeshi is museum quality! It is also special to have such an early doll come to the market in such a good condition.
Kato Tatsuo started making kokeshi in the 1960s and studied under master Sansaku Sekiguchi. He is very popular and a major award winning artisan.
