This kokeshi is the work of Shinobu Suizan. He is known for his carved kokeshi and darumas. The carvings often relate to Noh theatre, folk art or the evil. He is quite a unique artist and is one of the few who does not paint his dolls. THe kokeshi is dated Showa 49 which corresponds to 1974.
This kokeshi depicts a hanniya mask often used in noh theatre. It represents a jealous female demon. It has sharp horns, metallic eyes and a leering mouth.
