This kokeshi is a rare find by the great female artisan Aoki Ryoka. A lovely nature scene is displayed on the doll in combination with some engraving techniques. This doll is a rendition of princess Kaguya. She is the main character in the oldest Japanese folktale 'The tale of the bamboo cutter'. This princess who originally came from the moon was found by a bamboo cutter inside a glowing bamboo shoot.
