This exclusive set Vintage Kokeshi is by the Famous Shozan Shido. These dolls are minimalist work and uses the natural wood to their full potential. These Kokeshi are wearing a mino. This is a type of clothing worn by the farmers and rural people in the mountains to protect them from rain and snow.

Signed by the artisan: the two large once are. The smallest one is not.

Please look at the pictures carefully to assess the condition of the item. The mino of the middle kokeshi is still attached at the back of the doll, but no longer at the head. This does not affect the appearance of the doll at all.

 

Short Bio of Shido Shozan (1932 - 1995)

Shido Shozan was born in Oita prefecture in 1932. Originally, he was a traditional Yamagata artisan and attended the Chuo University in Tokyo. He later moved to Yonezawa which greatly influenced some of his designs to depict Yonezawa motifs. His later work also often uses the natural wood grain to bring out delicate and beautiful designs. Shido won numerous awards including the prestigious Prime Minister Award. His kokeshi are arguably amongst the most popular, and sought by collectors all over the world making them highly expensive. Shido-San passed away in 1995.
