This is a masterwork by one of the most famous kokeshi makers of all times. The kokeshi is beautifully chunky. The details of this kokeshi are very well executed as is normally the case with Sansaku's work. This kokeshi has a rather sober appearance which we certainly like. Her hair is beautifully carved. A masterpiece with some age to it.
Sansaku Sekiguchi was born in 1925 and he is the only certified Master of Creative Kokeshi by the Japanese Government. He even has his own museum in Gunma. He won numerous awards including three times the prestigious Prime Minister Award!!! His kokeshi are arguably amongst the most popular, and sought by collectors all over the world making them highly expensive. Sekiguchi-San passed away in 2018. His sons, Toa, Toshio and his daughter Izumi now also make kokeshi quite successfully winning many prices at contests.
