This is a very rare sosaku kokeshi by Shozan Shido. There is so much that we like about this kokeshi. First there is the overall design and the recognizable face and then there is the great hairstyle that makes this kokeshi stand out. It is the first time that we have her in our shop.

Short Bio of Shido Shozan (1932 - 1995)
Shido Shozan was born in Oita prefecture in 1932. Originally, he was a traditional Yamagata artisan and attended the Chuo University in Tokyo. He later moved to Yonezawa which greatly influenced some of his designs to depict Yonezawa motifs. His later work also often uses the natural wood grain to bring out delicate and beautiful designs. Shido won numerous awards including the prestigious Prime Minister Award. His kokeshi are arguably amongst the most popular, and sought by collectors all over the world making them highly expensive. Shido-San passed away in 1995.
