This is a very rare design by Shido Shozan. She is beautifully slender and the natural wood grain is wonderfully showcased. The rough band give her a very modern look. She is made from heavy quality wood. This is a great opportunity for adding a very rare shozan to your collection!
Shido Shozan was born in Oita prefecture in 1932. Originally, he was a traditional Yamagata artisan and attended the Chuo University in Tokyo. He later moved to Yonezawa which greatly influenced some of his designs to depict Yonezawa motifs. His later work also often uses the natural wood grain to bring out delicate and beautiful designs. Shido won numerous awards including the prestigious Prime Minister Award. His kokeshi are arguably amongst the most popular, and sought by collectors all over the world making them highly expensive. Shido-San passed away in 1995.
