This is a rare kokeshi by Shido Shozan. She has a beautiful slender design and the natural wood grain is wonderfully showcased. This kokeshi is tucked in well for the winterdays in the mountainous regions of Japan. She has aged beautifully! This is a great opportunity for adding a rare shozan to your collection!

Short Bio of Shido Shozan (1932 - 1995)

Shido Shozan was born in Oita prefecture in 1932. Originally, he was a traditional Yamagata artisan and attended the Chuo University in Tokyo. He later moved to Yonezawa which greatly influenced some of his designs to depict Yonezawa motifs. His later work also often uses the natural wood grain to bring out delicate and beautiful designs. Shido won numerous awards including the prestigious Prime Minister Award. His kokeshi are arguably amongst the most popular, and sought by collectors all over the world making them highly expensive. Shido-San passed away in 1995.
