Fukuju Yusa was born in Miyagi Prefecture and originally a Narugo artist. He began making creative Kokeshi in the late 1950s. He created award-winning dolls including this kokeshi fro which he won the Prime Minister's Award in the 1960s. The title of this kokeshi is 'Hoju', meaning 'a sacred gem and wish fulfilling jewel'. It is believed to bring good health and make all dreams come true. Dragon's are often depicted holding a hoju.
