This is a rare Samurai kokeshi by Sato Suigai. This kokeshi is a rendition of the famous samurai Date Masamune (1567-1636), who was a regional ruler during the early edo period. Date Masamune was missing one eye and was therefore nicknamed 'dokuganryū - the one-eyed dragon of Oshu'. This kokeshi has the classic samurai helmet and armour. A must have!
