This Vintage Kokeshi is a special design by Kiyohara Takao as she is monochrome and with bands. She has some influences from both the creative and traditional designs.
Kiyohara Takao was an independent and well-established craftsman born in 1916. He is considered a “mystery man” as little is known about his background or about whom he might have studied under. He lived in Shiroishi City (Miyagi Prefecture) and won multiple awards including the Prime Minister’s Prize at the All-Japan Kokeshi Contest in 1989. He was also an army pilot and he is considered to have been one of the people who helped pioneer the sosaku kokeshi movement. He is now deceased, date of passing undetermined.
