This kokeshi is spectacular! It is easily recognisable as the work by the famous Inosuke Kobayashi. His Kokeshi are often heavy and big round pieces like this one is. This kokeshi is beautifully decorated with large cranes. The cranes or 'Tsuru' symbolize good fortune and longevity in Japan. They were believed to live for 1000 years.
Inosuke Kobayashi is a Prime Minister Award Winning Kokeshi Artisan and his kokeshi are collected all over the world. Kobayashi was born in 1931 and died early in life. His date of passing is unknown.
