This is a powerful Vintage Sosaku Kokeshi by the famous Hideo Ishihara. His dolls often have a minimalist design and are rare finds. This kokeshi is titled ‘Omiyamairi’ meaning ‘first shrine visit’. According to Shinto tradition one month old babies get ‘baptized’ at the shrine in Japan. They express gratitude to the deities for the birth of a baby and have a shrine priest pray for health and happiness.
