These two kokeshi are different from the mainstream kokeshi by Kiyohara Takao. Both kimonos inverse coloring (flowers left blank) are the main feature of these beautiful dolls.
Kiyohara Takao was an independent and well-established craftsman born in 1916. He is considered a “mystery man” as little is known about his background or about whom he might have studied under. He lived in Shiroishi City (Miyagi Prefecture) and won multiple awards including the Prime Minister’s Prize at the All-Japan Kokeshi Contest in 1989. He was also an army pilot and he is considered to have been one of the people who helped pioneer the sosaku kokeshi movement. He is now deceased, date of passing undetermined.
