This rare kokeshi was made by Sansaku Sekiguchi after the classic work of Japanese literature written by the noblewoman Murasaki Shikibu around the peak of the Heian period, in the early 11th century. It is a unique depiction of the lifestyles of high courtiers during that period.
Sansaku Sekiguchi was born in 1925 and he is the only certified Master of Creative Kokeshi by the Japanese Government. He even has his own museum in Gunma. He won numerous awards including three times the prestigious Prime Minister Award!!! His kokeshi are arguably amongst the most popular, and sought by collectors all over the world making them highly expensive. Sekiguchi-San passed away in 2018. His sons, Toa, Toshio and his daughter Izumi now also make kokeshi quite successfully winning many prices at contests.
