This hairstyle was popular during the 18th century in Japan and was influenced by the Dutch who had a trading post in Japan during that time. Katase-San was born in Kanagawa prefecture in 1922. Katase Kahei is a multi-Award winning kokeshi artisan. He won the prestigious Prime Ministers Award in 1954.
