This is a rare and large kokeshi by the famous awardwinning Sanpei Yamanaka. The wood grain is just spectacular and combines well with the subtle leaves that decorate the doll.
Yamanaka-San was born in Yamagata and made creative kokeshi troughout his entire career. His kokeshi are really sought by collectors all over the world. He won the prestigious 'Prime Minister Award' in 1979.
