This Vintage Sosaku Kokeshi by Toa Sekiguchi is spectacular! The design is chuncky and the kimono is just amazing. Her kimono is decorated with red and white plum blossoms. The Japanese plum (ume) is a popular flower in Japan and plays an important role in their culture. It is one of the first blossoms to appear each year and they prelude the start of spring.
Toa is part of a well known kokeshi artisan family. He is the son of the famous Sansaku Sekiguchi who has his own kokeshi museum in Gunma. Toa was born in Shibukawa City and still lives and works there with his family. He has won numerous awards for his kokeshi including the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award.
