Watanabe Masao is one of the famous creative kokeshi artists. He was born in 1917 in Fukushima Prefecture. He has won many awards; including the prestigious prime minister award several times (1963 and 1971). The predominant theme of his dolls is innocence (mushin). His dolls are in musea all over the World. His work is on permanent display in the notable Nuremberg Toy Museum.
