This is probably one of Shido's most well-known kokeshi. It is a tribute to one of Japan's most famous dancers. This sosaku kokeshi has such elegance. She can really brighten up a room!

Short Bio of Shido Shozan (1932 - 1995)

Shido Shozan was born in Oita prefecture in 1932. Originally, he was a traditional Yamagata artisan and attended the Chuo University in Tokyo. He later moved to Yonezawa which greatly influenced some of his designs to depict Yonezawa motifs. His later work also often uses the natural wood grain to bring out delicate and beautiful designs. Shido won numerous awards including the prestigious Prime Minister Award. His kokeshi are arguably amongst the most popular, and sought by collectors all over the world making them highly expensive. Shido-San passed away in 1995.
