This is a large Vintage Kokeshi by the famous Watanabe Masao (1917 - 2007). She is titled 'Chigozakura' or 'Cherry Blossom Child'. This design won The Prime Minister Award in 1963. It is Watanabe's classic masterpiece. The body of this Kokeshi resembles a cherry bark pattern made out of black and red paint. She has a high gloss finish.
Watanabe Masao is one of the famous creative kokeshi artists. The predominant theme of his dolls is innocence (mushin). He was born in 1917 in Fukushima Prefecture. His dolls are in musea all over the World. His work is on permanent display in the notable Nuremberg Toy Museum.
