This woodblock print is a Musha-e (武者絵). Such prints represent images of warriors and samurai from Japanese history and mythology. This print is the first of a triptic.
Toyokuni III is considered the most popular, prolific and commercially successful designer of Japanese woodblock prints in the 19th-century. He studies under Toyokuni, head of the Utagawa school. He focussed on traditional subjects such as kabuki, bijin (beautiful women), shunga (erotic prints), and historical prints. He was 70 years old when he passed away in 1864.
