At first sight, we have to admit that we did not recognize this kokeshi as a kokeshi by Sanpei Yamanaka. However, the signature is his. We were mislead by the eyes (with eyelashes) that differ from his classic design making this doll very intriguing. The bands as a colorful rainbow-like pattern is a more common feature of Sanpei's work.
Yamanaka-San was born in Yamagata and made creative kokeshi throughout his entire career. His kokeshi are really sought by collectors all over the world. He won the prestigious 'Prime Minister Award' in 1979.
