This is a lovely Vintage Sosaku Kokeshi by Sansaku Sekiguchi. This elegant Kokeshi has a lovely red kimono decorated with the Kiri (桐) flower. The Kiri flower, or Paulownia flower, is a three-leafed flower that is associated with the Japanese imperial family (especially the empress) and that was widely used by samurai families in the Edo era. This kokeshi comes with her original box.

Short Bio Sansaku Sekiguchi (1925-2018)

Sansaku Sekiguchi was born in 1925 and he is the only certified Master of Creative Kokeshi by the Japanese Government. He even has his own museum in Gunma. He won numerous awards including three times the prestigious Prime Minister Award!!! His kokeshi are arguably amongst the most popular, and sought by collectors all over the world making them highly expensive. Sekiguchi-San passed away in 2018. His sons, Toa, Toshio and his daughter Izumi now also make kokeshi quite successfully winning many prices at contests.
